What English do you need for daily life abroad?

An international license is valid for a limited time. You'll need to pass a written knowledge test and a behind-the-wheel driving test. First, fill out this application and bring it to Window 3.

If your documents check out, yes. The test is 36 multiple-choice questions. You need to get 30 right to pass. It's available in multiple languages.

Once you pass the written test, you'll get a learner's permit. You can schedule the driving test online — the earliest appointment is usually two to three weeks out. Bring your own vehicle and proof of insurance.

You can renew online if your license is not yet expired and you renewed in person last time. Otherwise, you need to come in. Do you have a REAL ID or a standard license?

Good idea. For REAL ID, you'll need your birth certificate or passport, Social Security card, and two proofs of California residency. The renewal fee is $40.
