How to handle banking and telecom in English abroad?

We have three sizes currently available. Small is 3 by 5 inches at $60 a year — perfect for documents and jewelry. Medium is 5 by 10 at $120 a year — fits legal documents and small valuables. Large is 10 by 10 at $250 a year — good for larger items. You do need to have an account with us to rent one.

You can access your box anytime during our lobby hours — that's Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and Saturday 9 to noon. You'll need to present your ID and sign in each visit. You'll receive two keys — please keep them safe because a replacement key costs $150. And we do require that you be present in person; no one else can access it unless they're listed as an authorized signer.

That's an important question. No, the bank does not insure the contents of safe deposit boxes. FDIC coverage only applies to deposit accounts, not physical items stored in our vault. I'd strongly recommend adding a rider to your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy to cover the items. You should also keep a detailed inventory with photos at home.

You cannot store anything hazardous, illegal, or perishable. As for cash — you can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Cash in a box doesn't earn interest and isn't FDIC-insured. If something happens to the vault — flood, fire — there's no guarantee of recovery. Better to keep cash in a savings account where it earns interest and is fully protected up to $250,000.

Actually, I'd advise against keeping your original will in there. If something happens to you, the box could be sealed by the court, and your family would need a court order to open it — which delays everything. Keep copies in the box and the original with your attorney. Power of attorney documents are fine to store here, along with property deeds, birth certificates, and insurance policies.
