The airport is usually your first English-speaking interaction when traveling abroad. Getting through check-in, security, and boarding smoothly sets the tone for your entire trip. The good news? You only need about 10 key phrases to handle 90% of airport situations.
The 10 phrases you need
1. At the check-in counter
"I'd like to check in for my flight to [destination]."
我想办理飞往[目的地]的航班值机。
This is your opening line. Have your passport ready — the agent will ask for it next.
2. Luggage declaration
"I have one checked bag and one carry-on."
我有一件托运行李和一件随身行李。
Airlines will ask about your luggage. Keep it simple and state the number clearly.
3. Seat preference
"Could I have a window seat, please?"
可以给我一个靠窗的座位吗？
Other options: "aisle seat" (过道座位) or "exit row" (紧急出口排).
4. At security
"Do I need to take this out?"
这个需要拿出来吗？
When unsure if your laptop, tablet, or liquids need to be removed from your bag.
5. Finding your gate
"Excuse me, where is gate B12?"

Airport staff are used to this question. They'll point you in the right direction.
6. Boarding
"Here's my boarding pass."

Simple and effective when the gate agent scans your pass.
7. Overhead bin
"Is there room in the overhead bin?"

Ask a flight attendant if the bins near your seat look full.
8. Connection flights

Essential for layovers. Airport staff will direct you to the transfer area.
9. Delay or cancellation
"My flight has been delayed. What are my options?"

Stay calm and ask at the service counter. They may rebook you or offer vouchers.
10. Lost luggage
"My luggage didn't arrive. Where do I report this?"
